Aurel Szondi was born on October 27, 1927 in Hungary. He played with Honved Budapest in Hungary. The center forward is said to have played between Hungarian legends Sandor Kocsis and Ferencs Puskas while with Honved.

After the Hungarian revolution in 1956 Aurel emigrated to Canada and joined Toronto Hungaria. He helped his club to a fourth place finish in the 1957 National Soccer League season.

In 1958 Aurel joined Golden Mile in the Canadian Continental League. Aurel scored 35 goals as the club finished second in the league standings.

Then followed a return to Toronto Hungaria and the forward scored 17 league goals during the 1959 season. Toronto Hungaria finished in sixth place in the final standings in the 1959 National Soccer League season.

The prolific goalscorer returned to Golden Mile in 1960. The club finished fourth in the Toronto & District League. Aurel was the leading goalscorer in the league.

His club Golden Mile reached the 1960 Canadian Challenge Cup final. However, they lost to Westminster Royals in the Carling Cup Final.

Aurel retired from soccer after the 1960 season but made a comeback in 1961 with Toronto Hungaria. He helped Hungaria move from last place in the standings, to a sixth-place finish in the 1961 National Soccer League season. He continued to play for Hungaria in the 1962 NSL season.

Aurel passed away on December 18, 1994 in Toronto, Ontario.
