Maxie Johnston was born in Rutherglen, Scotland, on January 5, 1926. He was a member of Dundee in Scotland before emigrating to Canada.

The left half won the Lord Atholstan Cup, emblematic of the National Soccer League playoff championship, with Hamilton Westinghouse in 1950. He was regularly picked for the Ontario All Star team.

He was an automatic selection for Hamilton & District All-Star teams. On May 19, 1954 Maxie played at left half against Glasgow Rangers in Hamilton. The Scottish club won 6-0 in front of 10,000 soccer fans at Civic Stadium.

On May 18, 1955 Maxie scored Hamilton All-Stars’ only goal in their 7-1 defeat to English touring side Huddersfield Town. 5,000 fans watched the game at Civic Stadium in Hamilton.

In the late 1950’s Maxie followed the path of several other National Soccer League players and moved to California. He played for St. Stephen’s in the Greater Los Angeles Soccer League.
