On Saturday night June 24, 1961, Eastern Canada Professional Soccer league club played against touring French club Stade de Reims. Toronto City included English stars like Stanley Matthews, Danny Blanchflower and Johnny Haynes. Reims included stars like Raymond Kopa and Roger Piantoni.
10,722 soccer fans watched Toronto City defeat Reims 2-1. It was said to be the first time for more than 30 years that a Toronto team had beaten visiting European club.
Former Welsh youth international Ambrose Morgan scored both goals for Toronto City inside the first 45 minutes of the game. Both goals came on passes from Jackie Mudie.
Jean Muller scored for Reims less than a minute after the start of the second half.
Stade de Reims would go on to win the French League championship in the 1961-62 season.
