Toronto City played their second game in the newly-formed Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League at Varsity Stadium in Toronto om May 24, 1961. The crowd of 7,515 was said to be above the 6,000 needed for the new league to break even.

The match started with both teams playing defensive soccer, and the score remained at 0-0 at half-time.

Three minutes into the second half inside right Jackie Mudie took what was described as a beautiful pass from 46-year old Stanley Matthews to give Toronto City a 1-0 lead.

10 minutes into the second half Cantalia’s Ismael Ferreira scores the Montreal club’s only goal on a pass from Juarez Dante.

Then Stan Matthews scored what was described as the best goal of the game when he scored directly from a free kick from 35 yards eighteen minutes into the second half. The free kick had been awarded after Cantalia’s right back Guilio Neira had tripped City’s outside left Allan Harvey.

Eleven minutes later Danny Blanchflower, playing at inside left, slipped a pass to Jack Mudie who scored to give Toronto City a 3-1 lead.

Jackie Mudie scored his third goal of the game when he according to the Montreal Star newspaper “ran 45 yards down the right wing, crossed to the centre and tapped the ball into the right corner”. With City being 4-1 up and after scoring his third goal Jack Mudie went off after being “shaken up”.
