Started his career with Glasgow United.
In April 1974 Stewart joined Scottish First Division club St. Johnstone. Made his first-team debut on 20 August 1975 against Kilmarnock.
Stew signed a contract with National Soccer League club Hamilton Italo-Canadians in April 1977. He flew out to Canada in the beginning of May 1977.
