Bio:
Cyril started his career with Basford Hall Boys Club. He signed for Blackpool from Mansfield Town in September 1949 from Mansfield Town. After making his mark with Blackpool’s Central League side, he made his Football League debut in a 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough on 27 October 1951 at right half. He also played in Blackpool’s next Football League game, a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion on 3 November 1951.
Played in the 1953 FA Cup Final alongside future Toronto City teammates Stan Matthews and Jack Mudie. The final is known as the Matthews final. In his first-ever FA Cup game for Blackpool, he played at left-half when they defeated Bolton Wanderers 4-3.
In December 1954 he requested to get a transfer from Blackpool. Among the clubs saying to having an interest was Norwich City. Cyril made 22 Football League appearances and scored 2 goals for Blackpool.
In August 1955 he joined Cheshire League club Northwich Victoria where he was appointed as captain. After being rated as one of the of the best players in the Cheshire League in the 1955-1956 season he was signed by Football League club Bradford Park Avenue in May 1956.
Captained Bradford Park Avenue during the 1956-1957 Football League season. After making 89 league appearances and scoring 3 goals he was given a free transfer by Bradford P.A. in April 1959.
In July 1959 he joined Football League Fourth Division club Southport United. He was again picked as captain of his team. In March 1960 he lost his place in the first team and was released after the season.
He started the 1960-1961 with Buxton but was transferred to Lancaster City in December 1960.
In April 1961 he recieved an offer to go to Canada and play for Toronto City in the newly-formed Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League. On Thursday 11 May 1961 he arrived in Toronto together with eight other British imports, including Stan Matthews.
Toronto City played its first ECPSL league game on Saturday night 20 May 1961 against Toronto Italia. In front of 16,509 soccer fans Italia won 3-2 at Varsity Stadium in Toronto.
During the summer of 1961 Toronto also played in several exhibition games in Canada. This included games against the B.C. All-Stars and Real Madrid.
Toronto City won the 1961 regular season ECPSL championship based on goal average over Montreal Cantalia.
Cyril returned to England after the 1961 ECPSL season. During the 1961-62 season he played for Northwich Victoria in the Cheshire League. He then played for Fleetwood Town in the Lancashire Combination in the 1962-1963 season.
In 1963 he emigrated to Australia, where he played for Newcastle Croatia.
Cyril passed away at the age of 90 in November 2019, as the last survivor of Blackpool’s 1953 FA Cup winning team.
