Brother of Derek Smethurst (Chelsea, Millwall, Tampa Bay Rowdies & Seattle Sounders).
Peter signed for Durban United at the age of 17.
He went to England and signed for Blackpool on 13 February 1960.
Given a free transfer by Blackpool after the 1960-1961 season.
Signed for Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League club Hamilton Steelers in May 1961.
Toronto City borrowed him for their game against Real Madrid on August 25, 1961.
Played for New York Ukraina in the German-American League in the New York area in the 1964-65 season. Peter helped the Ukrainians win the 1965 United States Open Cup championship.
