Bio:

Brother of Derek Smethurst (Chelsea, Millwall, Tampa Bay Rowdies & Seattle Sounders).

Peter signed for Durban United at the age of 17.

He went to England and signed as a professional for Blackpool on 13 February 1960. He had arrived by air from South Africa only a few hours earlier.

In an interview Blackpool manager Ronnie Suart said “Smethurst is regarded as the best prospect in Natal”. He was the fourth South African signed by Blackpool as they already had Brian Peterson, Bill Perry and Peter Hauser on their books.

Given a free transfer by Blackpool after the 1960-1961 season.

Signed for Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League club Hamilton Steelers in May 1961.

Toronto City borrowed him for their game against Real Madrid on August 25, 1961.

Returned to England in October 1961 and through contacting Tranmere Rovers’ trainer Jackie Wright, the former Blackpool full back, he got a one-month trial with Tranmere.

Peter played in several reserve games for Tranmere and was offered terms, but refused to sign. Was said to have received an offer from a Durban club.

Joined Bristol Rovers on a trial in December 1961.

Played for New York Ukraina in the German-American League in the New York area in the 1964-65 season. Peter helped the Ukrainians win the 1965 United States Open Cup championship.

Signed for New York Ukrainians prior to the 1966-1967 German-American League season. Scored his first goal in a 1-0 win against Eintracht in his first game.
