Bio:

Syd joined Crusaders in the 1952-1953 season from Queen’s Island. Offered a trial with Doncaster Rovers in September 1953. Won a Steel Cup medal with Crusaders in the 1953-1954 season.

Had a trial with Burnley in August 1954. Syd scored six goals in four games for the Burnley “A” team.

Signed for Distillery in September 1954.

Syd joined Linfield in June 1955 as a professional. Won an Ulster cup medal with Linfield in October 1955. Also won a Gold cup winners medal with Linfield in the 1955-1956 season. Played for the Irish League against the Football League in a great 5-2 win at Windsor Park in April 1956.

Syd was placed on the transfer list by Linfield after the 1956-1957 season. He then had a spell with Welsh League club Merthyr Tydfil.

Returned to Northern Ireland in January 1958 and joined Glenavon. Won an Irish League winners medal with Glenavon in the 1959-1960 season. Syd made 177 appearances and scored 72 goals for Glenavon before leaving the club in 1962 for Ards. 

He made his debut for Ards in a 2-1 home win over Bangor on 18 August, 1962. After scoring 33 goals in 80 games in two seasons he left for Bangor in 1964.

After spending the 1964-1965 season with Bangor he returned to his “old love” Glenavon for the 1965-1966 season.

Syd emigrated to Canada in 1966. He won the Canadian Challenge Trophy and the Ontario Cup with Ballymena United in 1967.

In the 1968 season he won the Canadian Challenge Trophy and Ontario Cup with Toronto Royals.

He passed away at Headwaters Health Care Centre, Orangeville, Ontario, on Monday, August 3, 2020 at the age of 86.
