On May 18, 1976, Toronto Italia announced that Jose Altafini had agreed to join the NSL team.

Later in May 1976 it was announced that Altafini planned to fly to Canada on June 7 and play in 8 matches with Italia. It was said that he would retire from soccer after his spell in Canada.

Great plans were made by the NSL and its clubs for his stay to maximize the use of his short spell with Italia.

However, the at the time amateurish Canadian Soccer Association ruined this chance of publicity as so often before.

After his spell in Canada, Altafini joined Swiss club Chiasso and spent three seasons there.
