Bio:
From Kinlochleven, Argyllshire. Stationed at Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire when he did his national service. First made his name in soccer with the works team of Ransome & Marles.
Started his professional soccer career when he signed for Doncaster Rovers in March 1950. Played in 113 Football League games for Doncaster.
Transferred to Newcastle United in October 1954 for $23,000. Bought with the intention of being the replacement for Frank Brennan. Played in 22 Football League Division games for Newcastle, and scored one goal.
Signed by Rangers from Newcastle United for £3,500 ($6,000) in July 1958. Replaced Willie Telfer as centre-half. Played in 67 Scottish League games for Rangers. Won the Scottish Cup with Rangers in the 1959-1960 season. Won the Scottish League championship and the Scottish League Cup with Rangers in the 1960-1961 season. Given a free transfer by Rangers on 21 September 1962.
Signed for Southern League First Division club Cheltenham Town in September 1963 as a player-coach. Player-coach of Inverness Caledonian in the 1964-1965 season.
In May 1965 Bill joined Primo Hamilton Football Club in the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League. Played at centre-half.
In April 1966 Bill signed a two-year contract as player-coach of Hamilton Primos.
Played for Primos when they lost 11-0 to Glasgow Celtic on 25 May 1966 in Hamilton, Ontario.
Decided to stay in Canada despite that the ECPSL folded after the 1966 season.
Led Hamilton Primos reach the 1967 National Soccer League regular season championship and to the 1967 NSL championship finals.
