Attendend Grove Academy in Dundee, Scotland. Derek started his career with Dundee club Lochee United. 17 years old when he had a trial with Dundee United in December 1962.
In May 1963 Derek signed for Scottish League club Montrose.
Joined Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League club Hamilton Primos in May 1966.
