Buidling on the North York Civic Stadium was finished in June 1984. It was built as a multi-purpose sports stadium. The stadium was first used by the York Yeomen varsity football team.
In 1987 the North York Rockets started using the stadium for their Canadian Soccer League games. The stadium was said to have a seating capacity of 3,000.
Before a Canadian Soccer League game between North York Rockets and Hamilton Steelers on June 19, 1988, the stadium was officially renamed the Esther Shiner Stadium.

The Rockets continued to use the stadium until the CSL folded in 1992. As the Toronto Rockets they used the stadium in the 1993 Canadian National Soccer League season.
The Toronto Jets also used the stadium in the 1993 CNSL season as well as in the 1994 season.
The stadium is still in use for soccer, football and athletics.
