Donald Gillies first made his mark in soccer with Vale of Leven in the 1945-1946 season.
On 11 December 1945 it was reported by the Daily Record that the inside-right was attracting interest from Alloa Athletic.
Signed for Scottish First Division club Greenock Morton in September 1946.
Signed for Scottish First Division club St. Mirren in December 1946.
Signed for Scottish First Division club Aberdeen in May 1947. Played for Aberdeen against Buckie Thistle “A” in the Aberdeen and District League on 11 October 1947. Given a free transfer by Aberdeen.
Joined National Soccer League club Toronto St. Andrews in 1948.
Signed his contract with National Soccer League club Toronto St. Andrews in February 1949.
On Thursday 3 August 1949 Don was one of five players signed by Scottish League club Dumbarton. Played in four league cup games for Dumbarton in August 1949.
In September 1949 Don joined Hartford Scandia in the United States. Scandia were members of the National Soccer League of Connectitcut. He finished as the leading goalscorer in the league in the 1949-1950 season.
Signed for Windsor Sterling in July 1950 from Fall River. 27 years old at the time.
In 1955 Don played for Windsor (Ontario) club Rogin’s Rangers.
