Bio:

A product of Greenock juvenile soccer. Scouted by Arsenal and Blackpool while playing for Clydebank Juniors in the 1948-1949 season. Signed for Scottish League club Morton on 20 October 1948. Given a free transfer by Morton.

Joined Scottish League club Falkirk in January 1949 for a “three figure fee”.

Joined Carlisle United in October 1950 from Falkirk. Member of the Carlisle United team that held Arsenal to a 3-3 tie at Highbury in the F.A. Cup third round on 6 January 1951. Played in 32 league games and scored 11 goals for Carlisle.

Transferred to Grimsby Town for £3000 in July 1951. Grimsby Town manager Bill Shankly had been tipped off about Alex from his brother Bob Shankly, who was the manager of Falkirk at the time. Played in 37 league games and scored 20 goals for Grimsby Town.

Joined Football League Third Division South league club on 17 June 1953.Played in 91 league games and scored 28 goals for Shrewsbury.

Arrived in Toronto on Thursday 28 June 1956.Joined National Soccer League club Polish White Eagles.However, moved to New York where he played for Hoboken Soccer Club for 18 months.

On 21st February 1958 Alex joined Southern League club Tonbridge. He was still on Shrewsbury’s retained list.

Played for Hastings United in the 1958-1959 season.

Then joined Southern League club Boston United. Released by Boston United in October 1959 so that he could become player-manager of Southern League club Dover. Led Dover to victory over Margate in a replayed Kent Senior Cup Final in April 1960. Given the sack by Dover in March 1961.

Joined Aetolian League club Deal in August 1961. Released by Deal in February 1962.

Died at William Harvey Hospital at Ashford at the age of 61.
