Bio:

Glasgow-born John signed his first professional contract with Partick Thistle in August 1961 at the age of 17. At the age of 20 he decided to join his mother in Canada.

In May 1963 John signed for Eastern Canada Professional Soccer club Hamilton Steelers.

Played for the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League All-Stars against Scottish touring club Heart of Midlothian in an exhibition game on June 5, 1964. In front of a crowd of 6,032 Hearts won 2-0.

Joined Irish League club Bangor on a month trial in September 1964, but failed to get a permanent contract.

Played for the National Soccer League All-Stars against Israel’s All-Star team in Toronto in 1967.

Signed by North American Soccer League club Detroit Cougars in December 1967.

Johnny made his international debut for Canada against Bermuda on October 6,1968.

Had a one-month tryout English First Division club Ipswich Town in February 1969.

Then joined the New York Cosmos where he assisted the team in winning the N.A.S.L. championship in 1972.

North American Soccer League All-Star in 1972.

From New York he was sold to America of Mexico City. Voted top foreign player in the Mexican league in 1973.

Returned to New York Cosmos in 1974. Released by Cosmos after the 1975 season.

Signed for North American Soccer League club Washington Diplomats on 7 November 1975 as a player-assistant coach.

John passed away on June 19, 2011.
